Prior to the appointment of a new Head of Recruitment in spring 2005, the University of Southampton wanted to carry out an independent ‘health check’ on current resourcing practice, in order to validate the perceived agenda for change in this vital area. Our brief was to speak to a number of internal stakeholders (hiring managers, HR managers and other related departments) to assess the effectiveness of current practice and produce a report that would include options for change. Our recommendations included:

The purchase of computerised recruitment software to efficiently manage process and save indirect administration costs
Actions to standardise recruitment communications and promote employer ‘brand’
A programme of interview and selection training for hiring managers, delivered through closer links with HR
